Introducing René Depestre

A Haitian writer’s many exiles and returns.

January 14th, 6-7 p.m. CST

Meet René Depestre. In our first meeting, we talk a bit about this remarkable figure and think about how the novel is linked to his personal history. You can get an introduction to the structure of the book and the cast of characters, and use the reading of this first short chapter as opportunity to get acquainted with Depestre’s unique style. Artist Nathalie Jolivert (whose work is featured on this site, including above) will also share some of the artwork she has created that is inspired by the carnival scene from the novel.

We encourage you to share your reactions to the novel in the comment section below.

For further information:

Watch the video from our first meeting, including Kaiama L. Glover’s telling of Depestre’s biography (with the first part missing unfortunately because of a recording-fail!), a presentation of a timeline of the novel & events in Jacmel by Laura Vargas, and Nathalie’s Jolivert’s description of the process that led to the creation of her artwork for the In All My Dreams exhibit. Enjoy!
